CHAPTER 15
Pippa checked her watch before opening the door of the church hall. 10:32. The time in the police station had seemed much longer. It was a half-hour she never wished to repeat.
âPippa!â She turned and Serendipity was standing on the pavement, half hidden behind Monty.
âOh, hello,â said Pippa, backing the pushchair through the door.
âWhat are you doing?â Serendipity asked. âIs it a class?â
âPlaygroup,â said Pippa, hoping Serendipity would take the hint. She wasnât in the mood for chatting.
âOh, can I see? Iâll keep Monty under control, donât worry. Heâs good with children.â
âI suppose,â said Pippa, and Serendipity hurried to grab the door.
The children who could walk, or crawl, crowded round Monty, who lapped up the attention, while several of the adults focused on his owner. âI had no idea you lived here!â exclaimed Sam, taking the nearest chair. âI love all your videos!â
âUm, thank you,â said Serendipity, looking round the hall. âThis is a nice space. Iâve just moved in, really, so Iâm getting to know the village.â
âYou could do crafting sessions here,â Sam said. âOr teach a class. Iâd come.â
I bet you would, thought Pippa, unbuckling Ruby and carrying her to the playmat for tummy time. She looked for a chair, but the only unoccupied ones were at the far end of the room.
âAre you going to stay in Much Gadding, do you think?â Sam asked.
âIâm not sure,â said Serendipity. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and patted Monty.
âYou should,â said Sam. âYou could film a series. Or write a book, and use the village for photos.â
Pippa walked across to Lila, who, for once, did not have her phone in her hand. âHowâs Freddie?â
âAbsolutely fine.â Lila pointed to where Freddie and Dylan, aided by Henry, were presiding over an obstacle race. âBusy running the show.â She beckoned to Pippa. âWhereâve you been?â
âSomething and nothing,â said Pippa, as casually as she could.
ââK,â said Lila. âTell me later, if you want. Or text.â
âMm.â Pippa straightened up, met the narrowed eyes of Sam, and looked quickly away. âIâll go and get a chair,â she said, to no-one in particular.
âPlotting again, Pippa?â said Sam, with a smile that could curdle milk.
âNope.â Pippa kept walking.
âPippaâs our local Miss Marple,â Sam explained, presumably for Serendipityâs benefit. âAlways sniffing things out.â
Pippa selected a chair from the row of identical orange plastic ones, and gripped it tightly.
âYes, I read about it in the paper,â said Serendipity. âYou solved a murder, didnât you?â
âYes.â Pippa carried the chair over. âThat was some months ago. Water under the bridge.â She positioned the chair at the edge of the group.
âEveryone needs a hobby, though,â said Sam, grinning. âI like making jewellery, you like snooping.â
âI do not like snooping!â Pippa cried. âAnd I have a hobby, thank you. I belong to a choir.â
âOh, I love singing!â said Serendipity, most enthusiastically. âWhich choir do you go to? Is it in the village?â
Pippa could have sighed with relief. âItâs in Lower Gadding. Theyâre called Sweet Harmony. I havenât actually been going that long.
